Gunther Toody's
We took a little trip back in time when I had lunch today with my son Rob, my daughter-in-law, Leah, and Wil and Anna. We went to Gunther Toody's, a 1950's style diner, one of those fun places that is really more of a caricature of a 1950's diner with a black and white checkerboad floor, the hostess dressed in a poodle skirt and saddle shoes and the waitresses wearing bright red lipstick that matched the shiny red vinyl booths. Their name tags had them named Bitsy, or Babs, or Susie-Q. Not today, but in the past I have seen them all stop what they are doing and do The Twist when the Chubby Checker hit played over the sound system (though the song was not a big hit until 1960). Modern TVs play cartoons from the '50s. I'm amazed the kids from that era didn't all kill each off other with mallets or blow each other up with TNT as violent as some of those cartoons are. It's a kid-friendly, fun place with a good sense of humor.

An of course there is a juke box
I wish they had done The Twist today. I would have done it with them.
How awesome! Looks like it could land on Diners Drive-Ins and Dives (Food Network) one of these days! And your grandkids are adorable!

ReplyDeleteWe have a similar place where we used to live in Social Circle, Georgia. What's so funny is that you see the 'older generation' taking the young, or visa versa. I nice cultural meshing of three generations at a time that each can enjoy. And you can't beat the hamburgers, fries and shakes at these places!

ReplyDeleteYou're right about the old cartoons! This generation may have it's violent video games, but we had Road Runner, Tom & Jerry, and Buggs Bunny.
That place is decorated a bit like our Burger Kings over here.. old style, black and white tiles on the floor, jukebox, old posters etc.

ReplyDeleteI adore old timey places.... diners (even new old ones) are a dying breed in our country. I find it so very sad.

I love it! Branson has several such places that we love to eat at where the waiters sing the oldies too. What a great time ya'll had. BTW: Little Anna eats her mac and cheese like I do. I like to get into my food....just that type of gal!

ReplyDeleteI've never been there but I have eaten at the 50's Diner (Cafe? Can't remember.) at Disney a few times. It's a good place to keep the kiddos entertained.
