Senior Discount

A funny post by my friend Betty at A Glimpse Into Midlife got me thinking about our self image in regard to our age. Do any of us think we look the age we are? I'm pretty open about how old I am (62), but I like to think I look pretty good for my age. Oh sure, I have an 11 on my forehead between my eyebrows and I'm developing parentheses around my mouth, but surely those are just laugh lines. I'm a happy person.

There's nothing that shatters a good self image about how we look for our age like being offered the dreaded Senior Discount. There's nothing that will kill the buzz of finding a cute new sweater or a fun new pair of shoes like having the person at the check-out say "Hey, old lady, wanna save some money?"   I, of course, take the discount and limp home, go on feeling good about myself.

So far, in truth, my age doesn't bother me (much). I feel good, I look okay and I know what I have lived through to get here. It's all in the attitude.

How do you feel about how you look for your age? Is there something that can shatter your self image about how you look?

  1. I look okay for my age (67), although my blog photo looks better than I do, thanks to a young and talented photographer friend. You have to make the picture LARGE before you really see the wrinkles. I'm not sensitive about my age, and I love senior discounts. Since I stopped coloring my hair about ten years ago, I stopped having to ask...discounts are now freely offered and I happily accept.

  3. Age is just a number, I feel great, young and alive at 57. My son often gets asked if I'm his wife which really makes my day and really upsets him. Hubby and I were excited when we turned 55 thinkin' we would qualify for the SS discount at the movies. They upped the age that year...rats! We still don't qualify...double rats!!!

Ya'll have a fabulously blessed day!!!

  4. For the first time, just this last year (turned 54) I feel I started to look old. My skin has changed, my eyes have changed, I'm getting much more gray hair, which is refusing to accept the hair dye and I don't like aging. I admit it! That said, what choice do I have? I better learn to like it. Maybe wrinkles and saggy upper arms will grow on me?

I think it's because I feel young and I'm shocked that my body is not the same as it used to be.

  6. Ok, after reading the comments, I´m probably the youngest person here (48), but I can´t quite accept my age yet. To be honest, I would probably be really hurt, if someone would offer me senior discounts....
But we don´t have them here anyway, at least not till you turn 80. Then you don´t have to pay income tax or hospital bills. Luckily I don´t look that old yet... :)

  7. When my hubby turned 50, he was a tad put out that AARP sent him a membership registration. But I say, "bring it on!" Any discount is a good discount, in my book...

  8. It's funny you should do a post about this, because I came upon Susan Lucci on All My Children today after not seeing it for a while, and I swear she has had a face lift, especially her eyes, and it was so obvious! I thought how stupid it is, that once again they have a 62 year old woman being romanced by a much younger man (who is the father of her grandson, but that's another story!), and she felt that she had to make herself look younger. I thought what the hell would be wrong with her looking au natural, albeit with good makeup, hair and clothes? I really think the viewing public could handle it, don't you? I'm pretty sure I wouldn't change channels just because she had a few wrinkles and LOOKED HER AGE. I'm 61, and I'm not especially kicked up about some of the changes my body and face are going thru, but I'm learning to accept it and deal with it. I really don't think about it a lot - unless I have my picture taken, and then I'm totally taken aback that I'm not 21 anymore...or 30...or 55...

  9. Since my hair began turning silver at a very early age and I decided way back when to just let it go natural, I've been offered Senior Discounts since I was 35, ha! Oh well. Honestly, aging doesn't bother me. I decided to do it as gracefully as I can. As long as Dear Hubby still thinks I'm beautiful, that's all that matters to me.

  10. I feel pretty good most of the time...some things I wish I could change ...some I can't and I am working on the ones I can.

  11. I think it's fab that you feel that way... I hate putting ages to people as I always get it wrong. I am blessed with a baby face... SO FAR!!
