My 6 year old grandson, Justin, recited the following poem at the Oral Interpretation Program at his school tonight.

No Difference / Shel Silverstein

Small as a peanut

Big as a giant,

We're all the same size

When we turn off the light.

Red black or orange,

Yellow or white

We all look the same

When we turn off the light.

So maybe the way

To make everything right

Is for God to just reach out

And turn off the light!

Justin

He did a great job and he had a lot of fun playing with the flashlight he used as a prop. There were over 100 kids that participated in the program, including two of my other grandchildren, Jared and Hope, all of them reciting something they had memorized. (Most were fairly short, and some were in groups, so it didn't last as long as it might sound like .)They all worked hard and did a really good job.  I hope some of them remember Justin's poem.

  1. Wonderful poem. If only it were as simple as that. People would get along if God turned off the light. I really like this poem. Isn't it a delight to see the grandchildren in a performance and see them feel good about themselves?

  3. I get the same lump in my throat when my grandsons are in their little school programs that I did with their mom. And I'm soooo grateful to still be here to enjoy them!

I'm reminded with this poem that one time I asked my 6yr old grandson something about the one black kid in his class, like did he have any problems, and he said something like 'why would he?', and I said 'for being the only black kid', and he said 'black? what's that mean?" From the mouth's of babes!

  9. I love Shel Silverstein. Way back when I was in college, my brother gave me "Uncle Shelby's ABZ Book" for Christmas. I was hooked, and love his children's books as well.
Your Grandson should be proud to be able to memorize a whole poem and recite it in front of people! Good for him!
