I Said Something Mean to Doc

Doc went shopping the other day and came home with a pair of bright red bermuda shorts.

Before the filter between my brain and my mouth kicked in to tell me that it is better to be nice than to be right, I blurted out something like "Oh, my gosh, those just scream 'old man', kind of like socks with sandals".

Yes, I did really say that and I felt really bad right away about saying it  (even though I think I was kind of right).  Doc just sort of harrumphed a bit and said something like "I don't know what's wrong with red shorts". I said I was sorry and that he certainly could wear anything he wants to wear, (but I'm pretty sure I'll never see him in those red shorts.)

I thought that was the end of it. Boy,  was I wrong. Today Doc came by my office with a new very bright red truck, bought and paid for. He didn't actually say anything like "How do you like that for red?", but the message was there. I actually sort of like the truck, at least more than I liked the red shorts.

I thought the above was the end of my post, but since I got home and wrote it, I heard from Doc that when he got the red truck home he didn't like the way it fit in the garage so he returned it and is now out shopping at another dealership for a different truck. Whatever he comes home with, and even if he is wearing the red shorts, no matter what I think I will tell him that I absolutely love it.

I really need to learn to just keep my mouth shut.

  3. Hmmm, I think I'd be more likely to say something about him returning the truck because he didn't like the way it fit in the garage than about the shorts! I work real hard to not say things like "don't you think that's a little anal" to my husband.

  5. I think you did well in your recovery..We all flub up, no one is exempt. I kind of like the red shorts, not necessarily on my husband, but I love red. The truck looks awesome. Sounds like mid life has hit real hard...

  6. Actually a wife that really loves her husband does not let him wear socks with his sandals or bright red shorts. Definitely NO GOLD CHAINS around the neck either. I refuse to let my husband out of the house with socks and sandals. It is the ultimate in being a geek. Only a guy who is a total babe of a hunka hunka could maybe get away with bright red shorts. Tom Selleck can wear them, Tom Selleck can wear anything he wants to wear. Your husband ought to maybe thank you--unless he looks just like Tom Selleck.

  10. I kinda agree but then there are some things that just need to be said!! I have just spend ten days on an island surrounded by men in sandals and socks - I wish I had taken more notice of the colour of their shorts now!!

  11. I got a big laugh out of this!

Yeah. Red bermuda shorts......not my idea of attractive.

Liked the truck. LOVED that he returned it because he didn't like the way it fit in the garage!

  12. I'm not a lover of red shorts either, unless they're on an adorable 5 year old. Having said that, I'm sure Doc knew that you were just trying to help him stay "young at heart" and didn't want him giving his age away with his new purchase. As for my husband, he has never gone shopping for clothing since the day we met. I dress him and he's happy. Me too.

  13. If you don't really like it, you don't have to lie about it, just say how glad you are that he found what he liked and be happy for him. Personally I like red shorts but hubby would never wear them. Funny how we are all different, huh.

  15. Mr. Fairway has taken a page from Doc's fashion guide on more than one occasion. His casual summer wardrobe, however, doesn't so much scream "old man!" as "old guy who wants to remain a preppy his entire life." He's owned pink bermudas, minty green bermudas and several pairs of the madras variety. In fact, the girls encourage him. They buy him a new pair every Father's Day at J. Crew...

  16. Ha! That sounds exactly like something my husband would do!!! Thanks for the chuckle. I hope Doc finds the perfect truck, no matter what color it is.

    Cheers,
