Junior High Reunion

I'm not sure why I am going and I am not sure I really want to go, but I have just made plans to attend a junior high school reunion at the end of March. I have never been to any kind of school reunion, but I have thought about going to my (gulp) 50th high school reunion which will be in 2015. Maybe I'm thinking that starting with a junior high reunion will be a good way to work my way up to a full blown high school reunion in a few years. Oh, and I saw an airline ticket sale online so I booked a ticket and now I am going.

Why a junior high reunion? I think it started as a football team reunion (they won some big championship) and grew from that. Also, ours was the first class to go through all three years at a newly built junior high school. I went to Orville Wright Junior High in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The school was built in 1959 (I think) with a unique architectural style....it was round, and yes, all the classrooms were a little bit pie-shaped. I think it is now an elementary school.

Whatever the reason for the reunion, and why ever I am going, I will be there. I'm not sure that I will know anyone or that anyone will know me. I went through elementary, junior high and high school with a lot of the same kids, so there should be someone there I at least used to know. I will see who went bald, who got fat, who came out. One thing for sure, we've all gotten old so that should make it interesting.

I'll let you know how it went in a few weeks. In the meantime, do any of you reunion goers have any advice on how to best navigate this quagmire of a social situation?

  2. Never heard of a junior high reunion, Jeanie, but it sounds like fun. I like the design of the school! I went to one reunion, my 15th; that was enough for me :) I think the best thing is to go and just be yourself :)

  5. I have no sage words for you, Jeanie. I can't even imagine attending one! Good Luck! I actually have a blog friend from Tulsa - he always has great photos of the area. Do you still have relatives there?

  6. I think I would find a junior high school reunion scarier than a high school reunion. I remember very few.

  7. I just went to my first high school reunion after 30 years or so last year and was nervous about it, but it was great. I know you'll have a great time. I've never heard of a junior high reunion though. We didn't have a junior high when I was growing up. It was elementary until 8th grade.

  8. Like you, I have gone to elementary school (grades 1-6), intermediate school (grades 7-9), and high school (grades 10-12) with the same kids. And remember, Oahu is a small island. Lol. I am sure you will have a wonderful time with your old friends.

  9. Just be yourself and have fun....you may renew old friendships or remember why you didn't keep in touch...but most of all go to have fun

  10. I have never gone. Pretty sure I wouldn't even remember anyone from a junior high reunion. I'm looking forward to hearing all about yours, though! I'm sure everyone else will be feeling the same way you do about it. Have fun with it!

  11. Yes, I remember Wright school. I grew up and attended school in Tulsa too. How long has it been since you've been to Tulsa? Lots of changes and growth in the last 10 yrs or so. It's a huge city now! I've been to lots of reunions - Mister was Pres. of our Sr. class and absolutely LOVES these things. Me, not so much. I find it helpful to ask for a list of those planning to attend, then see if you can connect on FB or via phone before the reunion. That will help. I think you'll find everyone quite mellow and friendly at this point in our life. Anxious to hear how it goes!!

  12. I have never heard of a junior high reunion - should be fun. I have gone to all my reunions, but I do live very close to where I went to school. It was also a small school in a small town and our reunions are always held the weekend of the town's summer festival. So they were really more than just a reunion of our class - more like a catch up with old friends. Enjoy yourself!

  13. I would be surprised at a junior high reunion for sure - -most of my friends went to a different high school and I've not seen many in years, though a couple have shown up on FB. Let us know how it goes!

  14. My children went to Orville Wright Elementary School. My son was in their first graduating class as a grade school before going to Edison to Middle School. Small world. Both of my children attend their Wright elementary school reunions, so must be something linked to that round school. I have lived in Tulsa (still own a home there) for 45 years. We need to talk Jeanie:)

  15. I'll bet you have a great time. My mom used to go to high school reunions with her sister and they loved it.

  16. I have never been to a reunion at all, so can't help you there!
I think it's more an American thing?
Anyway, I hope you enjoy it and start looking forward to the BIG one in 2015.

  20. So did you go to Edison or Memorial high school? Just wondering since I'm a '65 Edison alumni.
