A Good Dad

Jared and Joel following 5K race

My grandson, Jared, 11, and his dad, Joel, ran a 5K race at a local town festival yesterday. I may be in big trouble for posting this picture of them immediately following the race. It is the "far from best" (I didn't want to say worst) picture I've ever seen of Joel who is really a very good looking man. I'm not sure if he was thinking " at least let me swallow my water before you take the picture", or "hurry up and take the picture because I think I might need to throw up".

The reality is that Joel probably shouldn't have been running the race at all.....he had been dealing with a kidney stone for the previous 10 days or so and that problem was resolved only a couple of days prior to the race. I did see him later in the day and he looked much better, but I'd say he is a Good Dad for rising to the occasion.

Jared, it seems, is also a good son. He came in 2nd in his age group in the race and he quietly told his mom later that he would have won, but that he had to slow down a little for his dad to keep up with him.

  1. WTG to Joel and Jared to do the 5k in the first place! That is quite an achievement in of itself! Congrats to Jared for coming in 2nd too! He does sound like a great young man to take his dad into consideration! Ick on the kidney stone; never had one, but I have heard they are very uncomfortable!

  2. Boy - those men and their races - no matter what age - are determined to run aren't they. They like get it in their blood or something.

  4. Man running after a KS battle...not easy. Nice story, good sportsmanship, but as a Dad, I bet he would have wanted his son to leave him behind and go for the win.

  7. How sweet! As parents, David and I have never participated in a race with our daughters. It would have been a nice bonding experience, though.

  10. High Five to your runners!!!! I love that Dad and son did it together.

And I'm hoping Joel is feeling much, much better. Kidney stones are not a picnic by any stretch of the imagination.

  11. Awe, that Jared is so sweet. Both of them deserve a medal! Cograts to them for finishing and I hope your son will not have any after affects from the run.

  12. Indeed a good dad!!! Love Jared's comment. How sweet. So when are you going to be in a race??? (o: I am sure you could...I have NO desire to. Funny thing is when I was a kid.. I was always the most athletic one. The first to finish in a race etc. Age has not been kind to me...lol
I forget what we said about getting together...soon though (o:

  13. What a wonderful father and son race. My husband and son did a half marathon together this spring for the first time and it was a very special moment for them. How amazing that Joel did the race after going through such a painful time.

  14. I am impressed. You're right indeed. And I hope that now that the kidney stone is a thing of the past, they'll have many more wonderful runs together. (I love that photo of Dodger on your sidebar!)

  16. What a great accomplishment for your "guys". Wow!! Talking about kidney stones is a whole other business. Those things are TERRIBLE and will bring the strongest to their knees. Hope SIL continues to feel better and he never has to deal with those awful kidney stones again!!
