Quit Reminding Me

Image from Google Images

I complained wrote about this several years ago and in the ensuing years things have, if possible, gotten even worse.

It is not that I don't know that I'm getting older. I'm not trying to deny that I'm getting older or to even ignore it completely. What I don't need is a nearly daily reminder in my mailbox.

My name seems to have landed on the mailing list of every company that markets their wares to "persons of a certain age". It is rare that a day goes by without the mailman bringing me information about a free dinner where I can learn how to manage my money in retirement, why I would love living in a newly opened retirement community or the advantages of pre-planned funerals. There are those who think I might be in need of an elevator like lift for my stairs or safety bars for my bathroom. My favorites are the ones telling me about the newest and best hearing aid, the most up to date adult diapers or a senior discount at a local restaurant. Nothing says fun like going out to a discounted dinner where I wouldn't even be able to hear the waiter tell me I had just wet my pants.

I know, the time will come when any or all of these great offers that come in the mail may be on my list of needs. Right now, I would much prefer to find a good offer in the mail for coffee or chocolate or anything that doesn't scream "You're Old!"

  1. Hi, Jeanie! You know how much I appreciate a sense of humor and yours is on display in this post. I can relate to this topic because I get junk mail like this all the time. Moreover, if you watch daytime television programs like The Price Is Right you know that every break is filled with commercials aimed at the elderly - insurance plans to cover your "final expenses," incontinence products, hearing aids, denture adhesives and medic alert pendants in case you've fallen and you can't get up. It is nice, however, to see old friends like Fonzie pitching reverse mortgages and crooner Pat Boone selling Safe Step Walk-In Tubs. I can't wait to see Granny Clampett advertising the Lifestyle Lift. :)

  2. Jeanie, you and Shady Del Knight are just too funny!!! I get those same pieces of junk mail too. I wonder if they know something because I seem to get more of the "final expenses" type than any other kind.

  3. The junk mail I receive is for funeral homes.

  4. I don't even look at these type of things. They go directly in the trash. You are putting a great spin on these annoyances and giving us something to smile about.

  5. I must not be in that age group yet since I don't seem to get that type of junk mail. Online I do get lots of spam telling me about men over 50 who are looking for a relationship. No thank you :)

    have a great weekend!

  6. Since I retired a few years before you did I figure you are younger than I am. Since I am not old, it makes sense that you cannot possibly be old. Junk mail is just part of life. Just toss it out. Then go look in the mirror and give yourself a big smile.

  7. I'm totally agree with you, Jeanie! Enough with the "old people" junk mail. My trash is full of it!

  8. I love getting senior discounts to movie theaters, groceries, restaurants, etc. The other stuff goes into the trash unopened.

  9. I can understand why a high-price retirement community would invest in lots of mailings, but I can't understand why I get so many hearing-aid offers. I guess there's money in that industry, too.

  10. Don't worry - when you get REALY old, they stop sending them!

  11. LOL!! My name's on the same mailing list, but I don't have near the sense of humor you do.

  12. Too funny! I think we get the mailings because we're members of AARP. I think.

  13. Growing old gracefully is not easy when we are reminded daily of the maladies that my beset us.

  14. Why do I find this funny? Seriously, that is rather annoying I bet. We get bombarded with company's trying to make us change phone/power providers, people wanting to clean our house/roof etc. I am so sick of door knockers and random cold calls on the phone... all trying to get my money. Grrrrr.
