Dog Telepathy

Doc and our dog, Dodger, pretty much fit the phrase "joined at the hip". Most of the time wherever Doc is, Dodger is right there with him. The exceptions are if it is time for a meal or a walk when Dodger sits and stares at me until I fulfill my responsibility to him, then he is back to Doc.

I am beginning to think that in addition to being joined at the hip, they may also be joined at the head....in other words, there seems to be a little dog telepathy going on. When Doc leaves the house, more often than not, Dodger goes with him. When Doc leaves without him Dodger usually just naps on Doc's pillow on the bed or sits at the back door monitoring the activity in the open space behind the house. Then at some point he suddenly lifts his head, perks up his ears and trots to the front of the house and sits and looks out the front window, and within 10 minutes or so Doc's truck pulls into the driveway....every time.

Doc doesn't come and go on any set schedule, so it's not like Dodger's inner clock that tells when it is time for something like a walk, that usually happens at about the same time each day, is due to happen. The only answer I can come up with is Dog Telepathy . I'm sure there is a better, more logical explanation as to how Dodger always knows that Doc is nearly home but I don't know what it is. For now, I am sticking with Dog Telepathy.

I just hope he doesn't learn to levitate his
treats out of the cabinet next.

  2. Our dog Slim announces the arrival of kids and grand kids about 10 minutes before they arrive. It is uncanny.

Slim is my dog and before my surgeries I told my sister, "There must me something wrong with me because Slim will not leave my side." Sure enough I should have listened to my dog.

  4. How cute Dodger waiting for Doc to come home. That is interesting; I think your theory of dog telepathy could have some truth in it. Koda will wait at the door but hubby's schedule is pretty fixed within five to ten minutes when he returns. What a great bond your two have!

  5. THey can hear high pitch noises and they recognize their owner's car sounds, but 10 minutes away...might be telepathy.

  8. My wife and our three dogs have a similar connection. They like me okay but I'm not "mom." When she leaves they just stare at the door until she comes back.

Life is real interesting when she is gone overnight.

  9. LOL...they are "in tune" with their body clocks. Izzy does that same thing. She knows the sound of jerry's new RAV 4 after only two months, she knows my car...she even knows how he opens the door and how I do. She knows when it is treat time, the exact time each and every day...she reminds me when it is treat time if Jerry is asleep and when it is time for me to walk her. She still is a Mama's girl...but Dad is her "Candy-Man".

  10. How amazing these little guys are! I love the picture of Dodger. Yes, they know this stuff. We always need to pay attention to the little things they do to get our attention. Great post!

  11. He is an adorable puppy. I believe in Doggie Telepathy. Ours does the same kind of thing.

  12. Our two dogs are the same with Stew.
They can hear his car and run to the top of the stairs to wait for him.
But they know he's on the way home because every night I get the plates out to dish up dinner at the same time, and they know it coincides with Stew coming home.
    They are clever too.

  13. I can't tell you how much I love this post. How devoted and how sweet (but do you feel like a third wheel?!) Dodger is so adorable -- how he must love his dad! I've such a big smile on my face!

  15. I believe that dogs are able to know what we are thinking and planning. My labrador retriever, Cheyenne, always reacted when I was intending to go and get the Frontline flea medication to put on the back of her neck. I could pretend to look very casual, but the minute that dog saw me and perhaps my falsely casual body language, she would quickly go to another room, far away from the stash of Frontline in the bathroom. I love your stories in this blog. Lorna

  16. I have to agree ... My daughters dog seems to know when my daughter is coming to get her without seeing or hearing anything

  17. Before the grand kids, Todd and Jaime had a black lab and we babysat for her ... often (o: Same thing... she knew when he was coming and would look out the window by the door... no set time... she just knew... I thought it was amazing.
I have had a yucky stomach flu... hope it missed you.
