Friday Fragments/Freewheeling Friday

To participate in Friday Fragments visit here

Sometimes the weeks just go by way to fast. I am glad the weekend is here but I was sort of surprised to look up this morning and realize that it is Friday again. I have spent the week sort of buried at work and letting it stress me way to much. Yes, I am working on that.

This week is the two year anniversary of our dog, Dodger, coming to live with us. He came to us from a shelter as a one year old stray. Despite his sketchy first year, which he doesn't talk much about, he has turned out to be a wonderful dog for us. He is Doc's constant companion and has introduced Doc to things he would  have never known about like dog parks and doggy day care. He keeps us moving and he keeps us laughing.

Dodger, looking his best after just being groomed. It  takes him about an hour to get back to looking like his normal scruffy self again.

I was also a little surprised to look up and realize that Thanksgiving will be here in less than two weeks. I will have about 20 people here for Thanksgiving dinner and 8 more for dessert so I'd better start giving it some thought. My youngest daughter has given it enough thought to decide that we are going to have a non-traditional Thanksgiving meal. We will be having a Mexican food feast instead of Turkey. I was a little "hmmm?" about that idea at first, but a survey of some family and extended family said it was a great idea.
(Does that mean that no one was ever really that crazy about the whole turkey thing?). We will have some traditional Thanksgiving pies to go along with our pumpkin flan for dessert.

Feliz día de acción de gracias

A brief conversation between my youngest daughter, Joanna, and her daughter, EJ, before they were going to come meet me at Starbucks recently:

Joanna: Do you want to get ready to go meet Grandmom at Starbucks?

EJ: Well, I like Starbucks and you know I really like Grandmom, so sure.

A great compliment from a 3 year old who sometimes these days suddenly doesn't like things that she loved 5 minutes ago.

  1. Wow! Thanks for the reminder about Thanksgiving! I didn't realize either, how close it is! Love the conversation with the little one. I have two 3yo grandchildren also - they say the funniest things, don't they! Looking forward to hearing how the non-traditional Thanksgiving dinner turns out.

  2. What a cute conversation between your daughter/grand-daughter!! I like your idea of Mexican for Thanksgiving, Jeanie. We've done similar things when the kids were growing up; we lived miles away from family so we didn't travel, so we had to make our own traditions. We would talk about what we wanted to cook, some years it was turkey, other years steak, etc. I think what works best for the family is the best, regardless if it is the "traditional" turkey dinner.

Sorry about the stressful week; hope the weekend gives you time to rest and relax.

Dodger is one cute and lucky dog, as you and hubby are lucky he is part of your household! I tell you without Koda for comic relief here sometimes, life would certainly not be a bit dull.

    Enjoy the weekend!

  5. I´m sure she always loves her grandmom though! :)
Happy "anni-birthday" to Dodger. I think he is very glad that you found him at the shelter.
I laughed at that "1 hour till he´s his old self" line. So much like our Nico too. haha

  6. Oh, I love your dog! He's adorable! As for Thanksgiving, I would love to have a Mexican feast, too, but hubby and certain relatives would throw a fit! lol.

  7. We haven't cooked turkey for Thanksgiving for years. Sometimes we do fried chicken and say it is the cousin of the turkey. Sometimes we do steaks on the barbecue. Gosh, homemade Mexican food sounds awesome.

  8. I love the sweet conversation with the 3 year old!!! I am not sharing your post with my boys because they have ALWAYS wanted to have Chinese food for Thanksgiving and I say, "No!." Enjoy your weekend!

  9. Dodger actually looks like the Artful Dodger from "Oliver". He is just so cute. Mexican food might be less work than a traditional dinner, which would be nice. I love it myself. What your granddaughter said was lovely!

  10. Who wouldn't want to go meet a fantastic grandma like you!!! The girl knows her stuff.

Dodger is quite handsome all groomed up!

God bless and have a fantastic weekend sweetie!!! :o)

  11. TWENTY PEOPLE???? Yikes! I can hear the chatter already in my head! Yeah, mexican or italian food lends itself to large groups like that. Good luck!

  12. Your dog is so cute! I like the idea of a non-traditional Thanksgiving, I've never been a huge Turkey fan. I've never hosted myself, but if I did I'm not sure I'd want to do a turkey.

I also love the name of your blog, it's a great sentiment to remember.

  13. Dodger has the sweetest face. Enjoy your non-turkey day. I love turkey, but my husband could care less! You are feeding quite a crowd!

  14. My husband insists upon a traditional Thanksgiving meal. And since he's the cook, traditional it will be.

  15. How cute your granddaughter's comment is.

We always have tamales and green chili along with the traditional Thanksgiving fare at our house. We also have tamales and green chili for Christmas. This is served with another local favorite: potica.

  16. Oh ho! So your granddaughter likes Starbucks? I wonder if she gets to have some chocolate. She's very articulate.

Dodger is adorable. We still don't know where we're going to have Thanksgiving. Sigh... We're hoping my brother will host this time around.

  17. Dodger is THE cutest dog EVER. I could consider a dog as cute as that! I'm glad he's good.

Thanksgiving seems looming. Given the unpredictable nature of 26 and 23 year olds with multiple families, I'm not sure if we're going to do family TG on TG or aim for a weekend day. Two days after the weekend, we leave for Rick's trade show, so we'll see what circumstances bring.

All I can say is I'm very glad we discovered the turkey breast!

  18. I'm a little jealous of your Thanksgiving plans. This year I missed out on the Canadian Thanksgiving when I was away. I guess I'll have to have twice as much turkey for Christmas.

  19. Ah, Thanksgiving! Our family is so scattered around the country we have a difficult time rounding them up for this day of feasting. Christmas has become our "family time." More time, in fact, to hang out. I always wonder, though, about next Christmas, when school is finished for both my chicas. Better not think about that!

  20. Good grief, how can Thanksgiving be here so soon. I knew it was coming, just living in denial. Our October and November are so filled with birthdays, our anniversary, that it always seems to creep up on me. Love the picture of Dodger.

  21. Awww...what a cute doggy. I am so glad that he has worked out so well, and that he is a blessing to you and Doc.

We have 18 or 20 at our meal too. We will do ours the Saturday after Thanksgiving I think. We don't do turkey because I am allergic to it.
Mexican sounds yummy too. We all love that!

Thanks for the comment ryhme...that was clever Jeannie.

  24. Grandparents never go out of fashion - they are always kids' favourites!

Having a Mexican food feast sounds like great fun.

    And Dodger looks fabulous!

  25. Noticed the FF badge so I browsed over. Mexican for T-day hmmm that would be fine with me. So should I expect burritos the size of my head? Funny story about your granddaughter. They sure are fun.

  26. It kinda makes me giggle that you'll have more for dessert than for dinner. :) Love that Starbucks conversation. :)

  27. Kids say the cutest things! Do you just love it!!

I think it's a great idea to have something different for Thanksgiving!

  28. 28 people is, um, like, a whole lot! Just the thought of the preparation for something like that makes me tired! I know you'll have lots of help when the day actually arrives.

Don't you love the way a 3 year old thinks and expresses themselves? It's a great age!

  29. hah, Jeanie, aren't you glad to live up to your top billing by your grand-daughter?
So glad you are keeping busy :)

  30. Sorry you are stressed. Then add a big dinner and lots of people and I would really be stressed. I think it sounds like a good idea to switch it up with a different kind of meal. Will look forward to hearing how that goes (o:
Your dog is so cute of course. You have been lucky to have such a great pet from the pound no less.
I have not been good about posting and leaving comments. I think once a week is about all I can do right now.
Glad your Granddaughter likes you as much as Starbucks...lol
My 4 year old was here for most of the day and would not fall asleep. I let her just get up and watch a movie...then I was grouchy because I was tired after a morning at McDonalds. Right about the time her other Grandma was going to pick her up (her parents are out of town) she gets all teary and I realized it was a mistake to let her 'Skip Naps'. Oh man (o:
