Road Trip

Image from Google Images

I wrote most of this post over two years ago, but I am starting to feel this way again.

I wish my title meant that I am planning a road trip. Unfortunately it only means that I have been thinking about road trips a lot lately and wishing I was planning one. It's been a while since I have been on a road trip.....California to Colorado with my sister-in-law, Nancy

A good road trip is hard to beat. A good traveling companion, like the above mentioned Nancy, is a great plus. Whether alone or with someone, I love the "cocoonish" feeling of being in the car with nothing to be responsible for but putting the miles behind you. Good scenery or just one town after another, I love seeing things I've never seen before. I love having hour after hour to listen to old songs on the radio (and sing along if I'm alone) or listen to a book on a CD.. I love the time to talk with someone without all the normal distractions. And, there is no better excuse for eating junk food than a road trip.

I know, there are all kinds of road trips. Road trips with kids are in a class by themselves, but I bet most of us have memories of family road trips that were good, or at least memorable. I remember my Dad being stopped for speeding and having "words" with a policeman that I thought were going to land us all in jail. My kids learned that I could get from the front seat to the back of the station wagon or van with amazing speed.

My longest road trip was driving from Colorado to Belize.....seven days there, five days back and weeks in Belize in between. There were things about the trip that weren't great (a not-the-best traveling companion), but the road travel was an unforgettable experience. I tried to find some pictures from that trip, but I ran into some old Christmas candy, or maybe it was Halloween candy, in the closet and I got distracted and gave up.

As I said, I don't have a trip planned right now, but I may have to pull out a map and start planning.

  1. Now you have me thinking about road trips! I agree that they have to be taken with the right people, or they are not fun! Hope you get to take one soon!

  2. loved reading this, Jeanie. Road trips are really neat; did one last year to Montana, none scheduled soon but there is something adventurous about getting into a car and taking off on the open road. I often joke if we had the money and the time it would be fun to go across the country meeting up with fellow bloggers!

I hope you get a road trip soon!

Our longest was Oregon to Washington DC with a 2-month-old and 3-1/2 year old!

  4. When I saw that first google photo, I thought it looked like at least a hundred of the ones I took in Yellowstone to Waterton. I love road trips too, maybe because I'm not the one driving. You drove to Belize? Wow! That's amazing!

  5. Hi there, We also have done several road trips from Ca. to Co. and back again; one was in winter four years ago when we moved here-I pray I never have to do a moving trip again. I know what you mean though looking forward to another one-they can be such fun if you have the time to enjoy them.
    Have a wonderful weekend.

  7. funny we both have 'roads' on our latest posts. You sound like you have 'wander lust'...
the desire to take off and GO.
My mother was always ready to go at the drop of the hat. She loved the old song "Don't Fence Me In".
I just want to go camping. Has not worked out yet....maybe soon (o:

  10. Belize! I always wanted to go there-- I love the way the name sounds when said out loud.. so romantic and tropical and peaceful and exciting. Maybe one day.

Road trips as a kid were few and far between but on time our family (5 kids) headed to Pennsylvania with no hotel reservations. My folks figured they'd find a nice spot and we'd stop. Well-- with 5 kids that turned out to be a bit of a challenge. Finally we found a small hotel with a gorgeous honeymoon suite that would hold us all :-) We thought we were really living large.

hope a road trip is in your future soon. xo jj

  12. Half the fun is the planning. I used to like road trips. My first husband liked driving so we packed the kids into the car and headed out often. Like you, I like to see new places.
But these days hubby and I have such a nice quiet life. You say "I love the time to talk with someone without all the normal distractions." I can relate to that in that we don't work and are around each other 24/7 so we talk to each other and there are no distractions. Life is good.

I understand your looking forward to another road trip. And I look forward to hearing about it here in your blog.

  13. I can't tell you how many road trips I've planned and not gone on. I think planning is half the fun. Plan it, print it out and put it on the fridge. You never know, it may become reality.

  14. We have one planned for August which is hurricane season. But hopefully we will go and have fun! I love riding in the cars. I do not like it when my hunny leaves his cell phone on. The best part is getting away and turning everything OFF!!!

  15. I've been thinking about a road trip too. Trying to plan a trip down to the ocean. It's not a long trip, but where you end up is a great pay-off!
Hope you get to go on the open road soon!

  16. A seven day road trip? WOW. I can drive from one end of my country to another in less than a day and that half kills me ;)

  17. My hub loves road trips - me? Not so much.
I have a terrible time sitting still in the car.
Maybe I need to invest in some Ambien
before buckling my seatbelt. Gee, wouldn't
I be a fun traveling companion?!!

  18. You got my attention with Belize. What made you decide to drive 7 days there? How long did you stay in Belize? Did you enjoy going through Mexico?

  21. I love the part about getting in the back seat with your kids and finding the candy! Road trips are terrific. I hope you have one soon.

  22. sometimes trips that we make up in our heads relieve some stress and so when you actually do go on a real trip you can enjoy it more.

and i think it is always good to dream anyway!

  23. I had no idea you could DRIVE to Belize. My daughter flies there for mission trips.

As for road trips, i am NOT a fan. I hate being cooped up in a car, sitting for days on end. I like to fly to my destination and then STAY put for awhile, just soaking up the location and all it has to offer.

  24. I love taking family road trips, but the kids get so restless sometimes. I sometimes get restless as well when my husband is driving. I find that distractions help. I bring my iPad with me and watch TV or a movie. My provider/employer DISH Network has a TV Everywhere app that I can download onto my iPad, so I have access to all my DVR recordings and subscription channels from anywhere we are at. I love the fact that I can watch the shows I would normally watch at that time, and my kids love it too. I just had to buy a Sling Adapter for $99, which right now DISH has a great promotion for. Check out this link for more details about the promotion http://bit.ly/kzrNRf . It's a really great idea if you have problems traveling in a car or a plane.
