Six Word Saturday

I need a little help here

It's not that I don't know how to cook, or even that I don't like to cook. I just don't cook very often these days, and now I've got 4-6 people coming to dinner next weekend. I'm not sure how that happened (thanks, Doc). I've given my share of dinner parties and I am a pretty good cook when I put my mind to it, even with the way everyone has gone all gourmet and such these days. What thickens the soup, so to speak, on this one is that it has to be gluten free and dairy free. That has left me a bit flummoxed. I'm sure I can do some research and find some passable ideas and recipes, but I thought I'd ask some of the smartest people around, bloggers, first. Any suggestions or ideas, especially for side dishes and desserts would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

  1. I know that quinoa and risotto are gluten free. If you like these like I do, you can roast some veggies and pair with one of these. That's about I know off hand. I know you will find some great recipes, thank goodness you have a week to find and shop before the dinner.

  2. I had a dinner party last summer with the gluten free restriction. I barbecued salmon and chicken, made gluten free corn bread, roasted brussel sprouts, made a big salad and for dessert, fresh berries with whipped cream

This is the web page I get many recipes from. I know nothing about gluten free, but I know that one of the contributors to this website has to eat gluten free, so they have an extra section just for that. Maybe you could find a recipe there. But to have to cook "dairy free" also....that sucks! :)
Tell us how it went and if you found something.
    Have a good weekend Jeanie!

  8. I'd vote for Bobbies chicken and salmon. Ya really can't go wrong there.

Relax and have a great time with your guests.

God bless and enjoy your weekend!!!

  9. I also vote for the grilled chicken or salmon with the grilled veggie idea but be careful with the marinades because I think some may have gluten??? And some sort of rice dish. I'm not sure I have any recipes that are gluten and dairy free. Good luck and I'll be interested to see what you come up with. Have fun with your company.

  10. How 'bout a pork roast smothered in some cherry preserves and baked for a while? That's what we're serving up after church tomorrow to a gang. Yum! Add a yummy potato salad and some bunches of broccoli and you have a great meal.

  12. Hi Jeanie,

Maybe you can get some ideas from this website: http://www.katzglutenfree.com/default.asp. They follow me on twitter. I'm not into gluten free foods, but it this site looks interesting. Happy 6WS. :)

  14. Not sure what kind of soup you're making but you can use pureed vegetables (from the soup) and just put extra in or vegetable thickener (available at the health food store)

You might want to use a clear soup and there are a lot of GF stocks on the market.

I'm sending you a link to a really good recipe site. I've tried a lot of their recipes and haven't had much failure.

    What is your menu?

A lot of times if we have company I will make a clear oriental soup with some shreds of carrots, celery, green onion and snow peas with a little wheat-free tamara.

Then we will do a grilled asian style chicken along with brown rice (but sometimes they can have white rice) and a lovely big salad dressed with a sesame seed, ginger dressing.

Dessert is generally fresh fruit, grilled pineaplle is astonishing...

Or you could go the flourless chocolate cake route.

  15. Looks like you got a lot of good suggestions. I hope you figure something out! I'd be a bit intimidated by the restrictions as well because I'm not used to cooking within too many borders (other than generally healthy).

    Thanks for playing 6WS!
