I have apparently, without really meaning to, taken a time out from my blog so I have decided to make it an official time out and take a blog break. I reserve the right to return briefly or long term at will. After 5 1/2 years of blogging I love and appreciate my blog friends and I will continue reading what you have to say.

It was the 3rd of June, another sleepy, dusty, delta day......oops, wrong ode. My 4th of July started as a bright and sunny Colorado day and was not nearly as sad and mysterious as as the song that first line is from, "Ode To Billy Joe" most well known, I think, as recorded by Bobbie Gentry in 1967.

As I said, it started out as a beautiful day and I went to a July 4th celebration with my daughters and their families at their swim club. It was all fun and games for a while.....

Sad that it cut the day short and a little mysterious that less than a mile either way from the pool everything was dry, but all good because the weather was fine for fireworks shows later that night.

I guess it is a good sign that I have ignored my blog for a while when a couple of other bloggers send e-mails asking if everything is okay. I am fine (thanks for your concern) but the days of June have really flown by. I worked for a week and then spent a few days after that catching up with chores and errands....not much fun to write about.

We did have a good Father's Day picnic (minus my son and his family who were out of town) with baseball and water balloons.

Even though only one or two are from the original Beach Boys the music was great

and it was a very fun and nostalgic way to greet the summer

Now I am hoping for things to slow down for a bit with some time to enjoy the lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer.

The following is a short post I wrote about two years ago that, to say the least, fell flat with those who read it, never a good feeling for a blogger. A new TV ad that I just heard this week (see below) has made me feel a little better.

This blast from the past showed up on my car radio this morning. Most all of us (at least those of a certain age) will remember the Chicken Fat song, also known as "The Youth Fitness Song".

The song was written for President Kennedy's Physical Fitness Program and was distributed to all the school districts in the country in the early 60s. It was composed by Meredith Wilson and recorded by Robert Preston, both of Music Man fame.

It became a hit song and was played in both schools and homes. I remember working out to it in gym class (wearing the one-piece gym suit that was the requirement of the day). For a time at my school it was even played each morning over the school speaker system so kids and teachers could work up a sweat before the day began.

Wherever and whenever it was played, when it came to the tag line Give that chicken fat back to the chicken and don't be chicken again!, everyone sang together at the top of their lungs.

Maybe a resurrection of the Chicken Fat song is just what we need to help solve the problem of today's childhood obesity.

If this song is a blast from your past, do you have any Chicken Fat Memories?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Nearly every person that commented on the post said in one way or another that they had never heard of the song, didn't know what I was talking about and certainly had no memories to share. Sigh....a blog bomb for sure.
Well, these nearly two years later Apple has made me feel a little better by featuring the Chicken Fat song in a new TV ad for the Iphone 5s. At least someone besides me remembers this song that I had such strong memories for me.
Thanks Apple
Grandparents sometimes wonder and talk about what their grandkids will remember about them. Will they remember that they were fun or funny or that they taught them wise things about the world or taught them how to bake cookies or told them wonderful stories? I'm pretty sure that the main thing my grandkids will remember about me is that it was a really bad idea to hide from Grandmom.
I know kids think it is fun to hide and hear you calling and calling for them while they crouch down and giggle in their hiding place. I don't think it is fun or funny. When I can't find a kid, I panic. Even at home when I know they are around somewhere I don't like it one bit if I can't find them.
One of my granddaughters found this out a few years ago when I was staying with her at her house and she thought it would be funny to hide from me in the basement. By the time she finally emerged I had called her mom and was considering calling the police. I know, I know, an over reaction but I can't help it.
This morning my 3 year old grandson was at my house and I called him several times and got no response. Yes, we did find him hiding behind the curtain in the bedroom. He came out with a big smile on his face. I did not have a big smile on my face and I think the poor kid will think twice before he hides from me again.
I think maybe this stems from an incident many years ago when my son was about 5 years old. He had a friend over playing and the little boy, as boys do, thought it would be fun to hide. I was completely panicked that I had lost some one else's child by the time we found him. He thought it was funny and when his mom picked him up she thought it was funny. I. did. not. think. it. was. funny!
Needless to say, I am not a big fan of playing hide and seek with the kids so they have made up a game called Dumb Hide and Seek. There are lots of rules but the basis of the game is that you just pretend you can't see the other players. I have to give them credit for what they are willing to do for their <strike>dumb</strike>, <strike>crazy</strike> grandmom.
By the end of this week all of my school age grandkids will be done with school for the summer. Before summer can begin there have been lots of end-of-school activities tailor-made for a proud grandmom.
It, sadly, seems that I may not be the Queen Of Cell Phone Etiquette that I proclaimed myself to be when I first addressed this issue in a post several years ago. If I were the true queen my <strike>edict</strike> suggestion would surely have been more universally accepted. Well, as we queens say "never give up" so I want to make my suggestion one more time.
There's a lot of talk about cell phone etiquette, but there is an issue that I never hear discussed and I think it needs to be addressed. When you are talking to someone and one or both of you are on a cell phone it is not unusual to be talking, talking, talking and suddenly realize that no one is listening. The call has dropped.
Here's what usually happens with me when a call is dropped. I realize I'm talking to no one, so I immediately call back the person I was talking to. The call goes right to their voice mail because, of course, they are trying to call me back, getting my voice mail because I am trying to call them back. I think, oh, he/she is calling me back, so I wait a minute for the phone to ring. He/she thinks, oh, she is trying to call me back, and they wait a minute for the phone to ring. When the phone doesn't ring within a few moments, I think, oh, he/she is waiting for me to call back, so I call and he/she........well, you get the picture.
I'm suggesting an easy solution that will save us all a lot of time if only you will accept me as the Queen of Cell Phone Etiquette and follow this rule: The person who placed the original call is ALWAYS the one to call back. Simple. Easy. Problem solved.
You're welcome.
I guess if I were the real queen I would be able to come up with an edict for that guy standing next to you in line at Starbucks loudly describing his "conquest" from the night before.
Thanks to less than perfect weather, our traditional Mother's Day picnic in the park was not a picnic at all this year. It was, however, a very nice indoor celebration that even snow on Mother's Day couldn't spoil.
The kids definitely had a good time....well, maybe this wasn't all that fun for Wil on the bottom.
A quote most commonly ascribed to Plato reads "Necessity is the mother of invention." When did this last play out in your own experience?
After giving it some thought it seems that the necessity to come up with and answer to this question would require some invention on my part and that just wouldn't be Plato-worthy.
3. Share one of the earliest memories you have from childhood.
Big family gatherings on holidays. My mother came from a family with 8 children and our house was where they usually got together.
When did you last 'hit the mother lode'? What was it?
Well, I recently found a $10 bill in the pocket of a pair of pants I was getting ready to get rid of.
5. What is/was your favorite dish mom made? Do you make that dish for your family/friends now that you're all grown up?
My mom was a good cook....lots of southern style cooking, but I was a picky eater when I was small so I mostly remember things like peanut butter and jelly and grilled cheese sandwiches. Her birthday specialty was German chocolate cake. I haven't made one in a very long time.
6. Mother May I? was at one time a popular children's game. It required no equipment or parts to play. What was your favorite childhood game where you could just turn up and play-no gear needed?
For a time all the neighborhood kids played a game we called Knights and Ladies every evening. There was no gear needed but we did make our own capes out of sheets and swords out of cardboard.
7.
Where does the time go? Time flies when you're having fun. The older you get the faster time goes. All of these cliches are admittedly trite, but they express some truth about most of our lives....time does fly by. Sometime a week goes by and it seems like I was busy but didn't really do much of anything, certainly not anything to blog about. On the other hand, it is these little things that make up life and looking back I see that the privilege of and the joy in being able to do these little things is a pretty big thing.
Some of the little things I'm glad to be able to do......
Kids baseball......lots of kids baseball. Five of my seven grandkids will be playing some kind of baseball this summer. I don't make it to all the games, I don't make it to bad weather or far away games. I don't even think that I was at this game that my 10 year old grandson, Justin, played recently, but I am glad to have lots of kids baseball games to go to.
Memories and the things that trigger them can be odd thing. I usually think I don't remember a great deal about my childhood and then I will see something that triggers a memory long buried. Such was the case when I recently saw a blue 1953 Chevrolet, the kind of car driven by the bootlegger that visited our house on Thursday nights when I was a young child. I have written about this before, but the recent sighting of a car like this brought these memories right to the front of my mind.
I grew up in Oklahoma and when I was growing up Oklahoma was a "dry" state, meaning the sale and consumption of alcohol was prohibited by law. Nevertheless, my parents were nightly cocktail drinkers, which necessitated one of the more scary memories from my childhood, The Bootlegger.
He came from Missouri on some regular schedule always on a Thursday night. He was a big, fat man and I remember him huffing and puffing as he carried the cases of Jim Beam and Gilbey's Gin up our front steps. I was scared to death of him.
He then went to the houses of a few of our neighbors, delivering similar booty. After he left, my parents and their good friends from two houses down mixed and matched from their supply and were set until the next Thursday night visit from the bootlegger.
The backseat and the trunk of the Bootlegger's blue 1953 Chevrolet were filled with his wares. To this day his scary demeanor and his huffing and puffing as he carried the boxes to the door come back to me when I see a car like that.
I'm not sure why I was so afraid of the bootlegger or why I still have such vivid memories of him. It may be because even as a pretty young child I had a sense that there was something illicit about what he and my parents were doing. By the time I was a young teenager Oklahoma legalized the sale of alcohol and the bootlegger disappeared from my life, except when I see one of those cars.
A very family friendly memory is of a ski trip spring break in about 1979. It was a very fun trip until the last day when I fell on the ice in a parking lot and broke my tail bone. I had to lay in the back of the van on the trip home from Angel Fire, NM to Midland, TX., and it was about 6 weeks before I could walk right. I still get twinges in my tail bone if I sit in a hard chair for too long.
I am a fan of pecans. I like any kind of dessert with pecans, but I especially like chocolate chip cookies chock full of pecans.
I have mentioned here before that around the first of this year I got a bit obsessed with the British comedy/drama TV show Doc Martin. I have to admit that I have watched most of the episodes at least twice and a couple even more than that. I have recently decided that things have gone a little too far when I started thinking that people in my life look like the characters on the show.
First was my hairdresser who looked to me just like Louisa, the doc's love interest on the show.
Louisa played by Caroline Catz
Yesterday there was a woman on the machine next to me at the gym who looked so much like the doc's Aunt Ruth that I expected her to have a British accent.
Ruth played by Eileen Atkins
Last week at the dog park there was a man who was a doppelganger for Al Large, the shows hapless plumber/restaurateur. He was even wearing a knit cap.
Al played by Ian McNeice
It started getting a little scary when I decided that I looked a bit like the doc's mother, Margaret. She is a very evil mother.
Margaret, played by Claire Bloom
So far I haven't run into anyone that looks like Doc Martin so maybe I'm not too far gone.
Doc Martin played by Martin Clunes
In any case, I think it is definitely time for me to find a new favorite show before I go completely Bodmin (a phrase from the show meaning being a bit crazy or a bit of an oddball).
Any suggestions for a new favorite show?
I attended a memorial service today for a woman who had worked for the Chamber of Commerce in our little town for 30 years. She was a quiet, friendly woman who never forgot the name of someone she had met. She was a woman who did nice things for other people every day without ever expecting anything in return. The hundreds of people who attended the memorial service were a testimony to the fact that she was a woman who lived her life in an admirable way.
It is easy to admire people who do big things in a big way but remembering this woman along with the many who came together to honor her reminded me that doing things every day in an admirable way is just as important.
I admire people who.....
Know that there is always something new to learn.
Realize there are times when it is okay to let someone do more for
you than you can ever possibly repay.
Have time and money and are willing to share both.
Are really positive about their political convictions
and really know why they are.
Don't take all the blame or all the credit for
the outcomes in their children's lives.
Don't always have to be given credit for the positive things for which they are responsible.
On a lighter note I would add people who.....
Are out jogging when I think even my basement is too cold for me to go down and use the treadmill.
Are over 15 and can ride a Tilt-A-Whirl without getting sick.
Get up an hour early in the morning to go to the gym.
Are over 15 and can do the splits.
Say they want to lose some weight and then actually lose some weight.
Who do you admire?
Since I haven't posted for a while this post should be a nice long catch-up post about the fun things I have been doing but it isn't ....because I haven't been doing anything, at least not anything fun to write about. I stepped out of retirement for a bit and I have been working for the past 2 1/2 weeks which left me so worn out at the end of each day that I didn't have the energy to do anything but recoup and get ready to go back the next day.
Working for a while wasn't too bad except for the stress over things about which I had no control, having to be up and out early every morning and being tied to an office all day. All in all, it served to remind me why retirement is a really good thing.
My daughters and their families apparently know how to have fun better than I do. They have gone to Arizona to find some spring for their Spring Break. (It snowed here yesterday). In addition to fun at the pool they will attend some Rockies spring training games.
This may not be news to people who go to the movies more often than I do but it was new to me. I am taking my 13 year old grandson to a movie this afternoon and my daughter alerted me to the Runpee app, an app that alerts you to the best time for a dash to the bathroom during a movie.
Image from Google Images
I haven't used it yet or even thoroughly researched it, but from what I can tell it allows you to set your phone to give you a couple of warning vibrations and then a final vibration that lets you know it is time to go without worrying about missing any critical scenes or parts of the plot line. It then allows you to read notes about what your are missing while you are gone, hopefully while you are running down the hall rather than when you are actually using the facilities. It also lets you know how much time you have to, uh, take care of business and get back to the theater.
Even if you aren't one who drinks those giant movie drinks this app sounds like it might be pretty handy for the pees-a-lot crowd of which I am a member. For .$99 I may have my grandson download it on our way to the movie. You gotta love technology!
Are you a good neighbor? Apparently I could be a much better neighbor. We live on a sort of semi-circle street that has about 25 houses on it. We have lived here for about 12 years. It is a pretty quiet street without much traffic except for the people that live on the street. Last weekend two of the woman from our neighborhood arranged a tea at this cute little restaurant and tea room in our little town for all the ladies that live on our street.
Out of the 14 or 15 neighbors that attended the tea there were three woman that I had never seen before. All three of them have lived on our street at least as long as I have. One of those three lives in a house that I can see the side of from my front door.....and I had never seen her before. Yes, I felt like a really bad neighbor.
I do know my immediate neighbors, a couple of houses each way next door and across the street, but I have obviously not done a good job of being neighborly beyond that. Most of the women knew me as the <strike>crazy</strike> lady they see walking the cute dog in all kinds of weather. I really enjoyed meeting and visiting with the neighbors that I did not know and would like to get to know them better. We talked about doing a block party this summer and I hope that will happen. I will definitely volunteer to help with that. I am determined to be a better neighbor (without becoming known as the <strike>crazy</strike> lady who walks the cute dog who waves them down for a chat when they drive by).
Image from Google Images
I <strike>complained</strike> wrote about this several years ago and in the ensuing years things have, if possible, gotten even worse.
It is not that I don't know that I'm getting older. I'm not trying to deny that I'm getting older or to even ignore it completely. What I don't need is a nearly daily reminder in my mailbox.
My name seems to have landed on the mailing list of every company that markets their wares to "persons of a certain age". It is rare that a day goes by without the mailman bringing me information about a free dinner where I can learn how to manage my money in retirement, why I would love living in a newly opened retirement community or the advantages of pre-planned funerals. There are those who think I might be in need of an elevator like lift for my stairs or safety bars for my bathroom. My favorites are the ones telling me about the newest and best hearing aid, the most up to date adult diapers or a senior discount at a local restaurant. Nothing says fun like going out to a discounted dinner where I wouldn't even be able to hear the waiter tell me I had just wet my pants.
I know, the time will come when any or all of these great offers that come in the mail may be on my list of needs. Right now, I would much prefer to find a good offer in the mail for coffee or chocolate or anything that doesn't scream "You're Old!"Jeaniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04810126999695733332noreply@blogger.com14tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5040438173687206889.post-56269738929087137202014-02-12T14:41:00.000-07:002014-02-12T14:41:23.114-07:00It Was A Dark and Stormy Night
In response to some questions from my previous post this is a rewrite of a post I wrote several years ago on my youngest daughter's birthday about the night she was born....in an elevator.
Let me tell you what my mom said
about the night I was born
It was a dark and stormy night.... I know, I'm sorry, but it really was. There had been rain , thunder and lightning with tornadoes bouncing around us all through the evening. Streets were already flooded and the rain was not letting up.
My baby was due that day. It was getting late enough that I had given up hope that it would come on the due date. The older kids were already asleep and we were heading to bed at about 10 p.m. That's when I got a sure sign that something was starting to happen. We called the doctor and he said he would meet us at the hospital. We called my in-laws to come stay with the kids and waited nearly an hour while they made their way across town through the storm.
My pains were getting pretty bad by the time we finally headed for the hospital, making several detours because streets were closed by the downpour. I'm sure I was very polite the whole way saying things like "take all the time you need" and "just be careful", or maybe not.
We made it to the hospital, checked in at the front desk, and a very young orderly brought out a wheel chair and invited me to have a seat. It was at that point that I realized that sitting wasn't an option. The baby was coming, right then and there. Instead of primly having a seat, I dropped my pants and and sprawled back into the wheel chair. My husband bent down and looked and said "yeah, its coming, its got some hair." Nothing says dignity like being laid out in a wheel chair in a hospital lobby with your shoes on and your pants and underwear hanging off one ankle.
The, by then, very white-faced young orderly spun the wheel chair around and headed for the elevator. By the time we reached the maternity floor I was holding a beautiful, 8 lb. 9 oz. baby girl in my arms. She was born at 11:55 p.m. on the day she was due. The doctor had some problems getting to the hospital through the storm and arrived about an hour after the baby did. Like I said, it was a dark and stormy night.
Thank you to my friend Shady Del Knight at Shady Dell Music & Memories for choosing me as one of the bloggers with whom he is sharing an award given to him. The award is the Liebster blog award and according to Shady, Liebster is a German word that roughly translates as "dearest" . A visit to Shady's blog is a wonderful trip (and education) into the world of music and more.
Among the requirements of the award is to answer 11 questions posed by Shady and to reveal 11 facts about myself.
At the risk of entering TMI territory, here are Shady's questions and my answers, followed by 11 facts about me. (I'll try not to be too wordy)
1. If you have a pet or pets, do you seem them as merely animals, or are they members of your family?
Our dog, Dodger, a 50 pound guy who came to live with us when he was about a year old is not only a member of the family but pretty much the head of the house.
2. Would you rather read a good book or watch a good movie?
I read books a lot more often than I watch movies so I guess my choice is to read a good book.
3. If you could have a dream come true, what would it be?
Due to my recent obsession with the British TV show Doc Martin, it would be a dream come true for me to be able to visit the Cornish village where the show is filmed.
4. What would you do with a billion dollars?
If a billion dollars landed in my lap I think the first thing I would do is call my attorney.
I actually think I would cope better with something in the millions than with a full billion.
5. If you could watch a creative person in the act of the creative process, who and what would it be.
My blog friend Jeanie at The Marmelade Gypsy is so creative in so many ways. I would love to be able to watch her at work.
6. What helps pull you out of a bad mood?
I don't get in bad moods very often, but planning something fun with friends or family is always a good way to cheer myself up.
And, er, well, uh....nice blog comment are always a good mood lifter. :)
7. What were you doing when you experienced the happiest moment of your life or felt most alive.
The births of my 7 grandchildren were definitely high points for me.
8. Would you rather be single and rich or married and poor?
Oh no, I think I will have to take the Fifth on this one. I can't think of any answer that would not tend to incriminate me.
9. If you are currently in a relationship, how did you meet your partner?
Doc and I met in sort of an unsavory way. A friend of his and a friend of mine were having an affair and without our knowledge were using us for "cover". We all ended up at Doc's house one night and it all came to light....it was very awkward and uncomfortable. It was several months before Doc and I even saw each other again.
10. Which is more blessed, loving someone or being loved by someone?
This could be a long philosophical answer, but I think I will just be honest and say I really don't know.
11. If you could time travel, which decade or century would you most like to visit? Where in the world would you go? Would you want to stay in that place and time or return to the present?
There are many historical times that I would like to have a first hand view of like the royal courts of Henry VIII or Elizabeth I, or Imperial China, but I am sure I would want to quickly return to the present.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

11 facts (or as close as I can recall to fact) about myself, in no particular order.

1. I used to write a weekly newspaper column. Blogging reminds me a lot of that, except without the paycheck or the large number of readers.

2. My youngest child was born in an elevator.

3. I was a Polio Pioneer....when I was in 2nd grade I was a part of the first group of children to receive the polio vaccine.

4. I thought that once I reached this age that I would be a lot more mature about some things than I have turned out to be.

5. The most fun job I ever had was being an associate producer for a radio talk show.

6. I do not like to shop.

7. I have been lazier since (mostly) retiring than I thought I would be.

8. If it weren't for being away from my family I would like to live in England or Mexico for a part of each year.

9. I drink way too much coffee.

10. I worry about staying relevant in the lives of my grandchildren as they get into their teenage years.

11. If I don't stop now and get this posted I am going to be late for lunch with a friend.

Thanks again, Shady, for sharing the Liebster award with me.
During yet another cleaning project (one of many started but not yet finished) I found my mother's address book, the old fashioned hand written kind of address book with people's old contact information crossed out and the new information written below.

From what I can tell she used the book from sometime in the early 1940s until her death in 1965 when she was 51 years old.. It is, of course, special to me because it was my mother's and is filled with her handwriting. It is special on another level because of the memories I have some of the names and places she entered into the book. Though there are many names I don't know at all there are others that bring back a rush of memories.

Cascia Hall was on of several high schools that my brother attended in our hometown, Tulsa, Oklahoma, that at some point "asked him to leave". If I remember correctly in this case my brother got in trouble for getting between a teacher and a student the teacher was paddling, unfairly my brother thought. Not to worry, things turned out well for my brother. He ended up with a P.hD and is still willing to stand up against something he thinks is wrong.

My Aunt Dorothy was a very cool woman who lived in a very elegant area in Chicago about 1/2 block off Michigan Avenue. Though I wasn't, I thought I was pretty cool when I got to go visit her.

Tippy LaGrave (isn't that a fun name?) was a friend of my mother's who had no children of her own. When I was 7 or 8 she started taking me to the ballet and the symphony and other such performances that I probably would not have otherwise had as much exposure to. I just Googled her and found out her real first name was Agnes....I kind of wish I hadn't found that out.

The Van Sants were friends of my parents that we visited from time to time in Colorado. I think he and my dad had been Army buddies during WWII. I remember them living on a farm that had a cherry orchard. My first snow skiing experiences were during visits to the Van Sants. This was so long ago that the skis were six feet long and made of wood.

Chloe (Snell) Key was a lifelong friend of my mother. My mother told stories of having to sneak out of her house to see Chloe because Chloe was an Indian and there was a great deal of prejudice against Indians in the small Oklahoma town where they lived during the time they were growing up. Her parents would not have approved of the friendship. One of the things I can say about both of my parents is that neither of them ever showed any kind of racial or cultural prejudice toward anyone.

I do have an old, handwritten address book that I use sometimes but it is far from up to date since I keep so much of that information on my computer or my phone. I wonder what my kids will think about it if they find it sometime in the future.

I don't know how it is for everyone but it is my experience as a grandmother that it is easier to be involved in the lives of my younger grandkids than in the lives of my pre-teen and teen-age grandchildren. The older ones get busy with friends and with school or sports activities and a lot of the time I "spend" with them is watching them in a school performance or from the sidelines of their sports events with barely a chance to say "good game" when the game is over.

So, when my oldest granddaughter, Hope, 11, texted me a couple of days ago and asked if I would take her and my two oldest grandsons, Jared, 13, and Justin, 10, to Target I, of course, said I would come pick them up and take them. They were not looking for any sort of bonding time with Grandmom. They had Christmas money and Target gift cards burning a hole in their pockets and needed a ride and the requisite adult accompaniment.

It was no big event or special activity but it was a fun time for me to get to spend these moments with these kids in a way that happens far too seldom these days. I liked hearing what they talked about to each other in the car, listening to their shopping advice to each other and observing their different shopping styles. Jared was very studied in his selections, knowing just what he wanted and making sure the box hadn't been tampered with indicating a returned item. Hope also knew what she wanted but was a bit more flighty in her decision making. She kept very good track of exactly what she was spending as she went. Justin was especially attracted to anything that said 50% off.

I'm not sure that the money they spent was all spent wisely, but they provided some priceless moments for their Grandmom.Jeaniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04810126999695733332noreply@blogger.com16tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5040438173687206889.post-71168912270410263482014-01-17T15:28:00.000-07:002014-01-17T15:28:03.534-07:00Good Intentions

The other day I was looking for something in a desk drawer and ended up cleaning out the entire drawer without ever finding what I was looking for. What I did find were all of these cards that I had at one time chosen and bought with good intentions to give or send to someone to mark a special occasion. There are birthday cards, new baby cards, graduation cards and blank cards in which I meant to write my own message of congratulations, thanks or good wishes. Obviously, none of them ever reached the intended recipient.

This made me think of something I once heard about good works and good intentions being as far apart as heaven and hell. Of course, I am not saying that my following through with my good intentions to send someone a card would change much for me or that person, but it did make me think about other good intentions that I have had that I never followed through. There's the call I never made to a friend I haven't seen for a while, the meal I meant to take to a friend who just had surgery, the check-in visit to an elderly neighbor, the whatever kind thing I thought about doing but never did.

I'm not one who makes new year's resolutions but this stack of cards has encouraged me to at least make an effort to do a better job of following through on my good intentions. I am going to start with a gift I have been meaning to send to a blog friend and then I think I will make a couple of long overdue calls. At least I have a good supply of cards to send when the right occasions arise.
